WAMC Northeast Public Radio is a regional public radio network headquartered at 318 Central Avenue in Albany, New York. Its stations and translators, in twenty-nine locations, serve parts of seven states: New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. The flagship, WAMC-FM 90.3, transmits from atop Mount Greylock in Adams, Massachusetts, and reaches the Capital District, eastern New York, southern Vermont, western Massachusetts and northwestern Connecticut.
WAMC signed on in October 1958, put on the air by Albany Medical Center and Albany Medical College, the source of its call letters, and was one of NPR's original charter member stations in 1970. In 1981 the license passed to WAMC, an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which holds it today. The network is listener supported, with additional funding from business underwriting, grants and government sources.
Unlike many NPR stations, WAMC produces five to six hours of its weekday schedule in house, including The Roundtable and Vox Pop, and its two program streams mix national and regional news, opinion and commentary, and cultural and musical programming. Its National Productions unit distributes interview programs to stations around the country, and it runs The Linda, WAMC's Performing Arts Studio, near its Albany studios.
WAMC hires across the newsroom and program production, broadcast and transmission engineering, IT, membership and fundraising, underwriting, and finance and administration, with most roles based at its Albany studios.
