New England Public Media (NEPM) is the PBS and NPR provider for western Massachusetts, based in Springfield. It runs WGBY-TV, 88.5 NEPM and Classical NEPM, and since its 2026 merger with GBH operates as a service of the WGBH Educational Foundation.
New England Public Media (NEPM) is the public media provider for western Massachusetts, based in Springfield. It is the region's source for PBS and NPR programs and for locally produced news, video and music content, including The Rundown with Carrie Saldo, The Fabulous 413 and As Schools Match Wits, a high school academic quiz show that NEPM describes as the longest running show of its kind on public television.
NEPM operates PBS member station WGBY-TV (channel 57) and its four digital television channels, seen over the air and on cable across western Massachusetts and northwestern Connecticut. On radio it runs two networks: 88.5 NEPM (WFCR, Amherst) and five repeating stations in Berkshire County, carrying NPR news, local journalism and jazz, and Classical NEPM, a five-station classical music network that also streams at classicalnepm.org. Its studios are in the Irene Mennen Hunter Public Media Center at 44 Hampden Street in Springfield, with a second home at UMass Amherst.
NEPM was formed in 2019 when New England Public Radio, which operated WFCR for the University of Massachusetts, and GBH-owned WGBY-TV combined operations. In May 2026 GBH and NEPM announced a merger that keeps the NEPM brand, its Springfield and UMass studios and its signature programs while combining back office work such as sponsorship, and NEPM now describes itself as a service of the WGBH Educational Foundation. WGBY-TV is licensed to the WGBH Educational Foundation and WFCR to the University of Massachusetts. NEPM positions are posted on GBH's careers site.
NEPM hires for local news reporting and production, radio hosting and music programming, television and digital production, development and fundraising, marketing and communications, events and community engagement.
