Vermont Public is the state's community-owned public media organization, formed in 2021 by the merger of Vermont Public Radio and Vermont PBS. From Colchester it runs statewide NPR news and classical radio networks and Vermont's PBS television service.
Vermont Public (legally Vermont Public Co.) is an independent, community-supported public media organization serving Vermont and nearby parts of New Hampshire, New York and Quebec. Its headquarters, newsroom and radio studios are at Fort Ethan Allen in Colchester, and its television studios are in Winooski. It is a community-owned, locally operated nonprofit with no paywall and no subscription fee; more than half of its funding comes from members.
The organization was formed on June 30, 2021, when Vermont Public Radio (VPR) and Vermont PBS merged, and the combined organization took the name Vermont Public in June 2022. The television service began in 1967 as Vermont Educational Television, a service of the University of Vermont, became independent of the university in 1989, and later operated as Vermont Public Television and Vermont PBS. Vermont Public Radio went on the air in 1977. The merger joined about 100 employees from the two organizations and created the largest news organization in the state.
Vermont Public operates two statewide radio networks: Vermont Public News, which carries NPR programs and the station's own Vermont Edition, and Vermont Public Classical, with locally hosted classical music. It is also Vermont's PBS television service, producing local programs such as Vermont This Week, Outdoor Journal and Made Here, and its signal has long reached a large audience in Montreal. Its news, podcasts and children's programming are also available on digital platforms and at community events around the region. Its journalism has won national Public Media Journalists Association awards and regional Edward R. Murrow Awards.
Vermont Public hires across journalism and production, marketing, events and audience engagement, philanthropy, membership and business sponsorship, finance and accounting, and technology and engineering. Its careers page lists more than five weeks of paid time off plus paid holidays, 11 weeks of paid family and medical leave, health, dental and vision coverage, a 401(k) with employer match, wellness programs and Public Service Loan Forgiveness eligibility.
