Maine Public

Maine Public is the statewide public radio and television network for Maine, a community-licensed PBS and NPR member with studios in Lewiston, Bangor and Portland that also reaches parts of New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Atlantic Canada.

Maine Public, formally the Maine Public Broadcasting Network (MPBN), is the statewide public media organization for Maine. It is operated by the Maine Public Broadcasting Corporation, an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit that holds the licenses for all of the PBS and NPR stations licensed in the state, making it one of the few statewide joint PBS and NPR licensees in the country. It has offices and studios in Lewiston, Bangor and Portland.

The organization was formed on July 1, 1992, through the merger of WCBB, the Lewiston public television station that Colby, Bates and Bowdoin colleges put on the air in 1961 as Maine's first educational television station, with the radio and television stations built by the University of Maine System beginning in 1963. It rebranded from MPBN to Maine Public in 2016.

Maine Public operates 14 radio frequencies, five over-the-air television signals and three television translators, linked by a statewide microwave network, and it serves as the backbone of Maine's emergency broadcast system. Its services include Maine Public Radio, with NPR news, local news and the call-in program Maine Calling; Maine Public Classical; Maine Public Television, carrying PBS and local documentaries and public affairs programs; educational services; and mainepublic.org. Its signals reach nearly all of Maine and parts of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New Brunswick and Quebec, and its television service is carried on cable across much of Atlantic Canada.

Maine Public is supported mainly by private donations, and its membership of more than 50,000 individuals and families is the largest nonprofit membership group in the state. It hires across on-air announcing and audio production, news and journalism, television and digital production, broadcast engineering, development and fundraising, communications and events, and administration.
