Marfa Public Radio is an award-winning, nonprofit, listener-supported public radio network headquartered on East San Antonio Street in Marfa, Texas. It serves about 30,000 square miles of Far West Texas and the Permian Basin, plus an online streaming audience. The network was founded in 2005, and continuous broadcasting began in fall 2007.
The network broadcasts on five signals: flagship KRTS 93.5 FM in Marfa and Fort Davis, KRTP 91.7 FM in Alpine, KDKY 91.5 FM in Marathon, KOJP 95.3 FM in Presidio, and KXWT 91.3 FM in Midland and Odessa. Marfa Public Radio bought KXWT from Odessa College in 2011 and relaunched public radio in the Permian Basin in 2012 as West Texas Public Radio; in October 2018 the two brands merged under the Marfa Public Radio name.
The stations carry news and talk from NPR alongside local news, public affairs and original music programs from the Big Bend. The local newsroom is central to the station's service and has won nine national Edward R. Murrow awards and dozens of regional Murrow awards. The station describes its mission as being a public service and a lifeline for its community, promoting cultural enrichment with a focus on art, education, science, quality of life and the local economy.
