Houston Public Media is the public media service of the University of Houston, based at the LeRoy and Lucile Melcher Center for Public Broadcasting on the university's campus in Houston, Texas. It brings together TV 8 (KUHT, the PBS member station), News 88.7 (KUHF, the NPR member station) and HPM Classical, along with podcasts, streaming, a mobile app, social media and houstonpublicmedia.org. More than 2.7 million people engage with Houston Public Media each month across its broadcast and digital channels.
The organization is built on 75 years of public broadcasting in Houston. KUHF signed on in 1950, and KUHT went on the air in 1953 as the nation's first educational television station. The University of Houston later merged its television station, radio stations and web services under the Houston Public Media name. The stations are licensed to the University of Houston System, governed by the UH System Board of Regents and operated by the University of Houston. Member, sponsor and underwriter support comes through the Houston Public Media Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
Houston Public Media focuses on local, regional and national content in news and information, arts and culture, and education, with a newsroom that covers Greater Houston and Southeast Texas. Staff positions are posted through the University of Houston careers site and include journalism roles (reporters, anchors, producers and editors), digital and audience roles, television and radio production, engineering, development and major gifts, sponsorship sales, marketing and administration. The newsroom also offers for-credit internships to enrolled students each semester.
