Montana Public Radio
Montana Public Radio (MTPR) is western Montana's NPR network, a public service of the University of Montana in Missoula, bringing Montana news, arts and hand-picked music to about 500,000 Montanans on air, online and on demand.
Montana Public Radio (MTPR) is a network of public radio stations serving western and central Montana. It is a public service of the University of Montana and is licensed to the Montana University System, with studios in the Performing Arts and Radio-TV (PARTV) Building on the university's Missoula campus and a satellite facility in Great Falls. Programming originates from flagship station KUFM 89.1 FM in Missoula and reaches listeners through full-power stations and translators in communities including Kalispell, Libby, Polson, Hamilton, Butte, Helena, Dillon, Great Falls and Browning, as well as online and on demand.
The station began in 1965 as KUFM, a 10-watt student training facility in the University of Montana School of Journalism started by journalism professor Phil Hess, and became an NPR affiliate in 1974. Its sister station KGPR in Great Falls signed on in 1984, and a 1999 signal extension project added full-power stations across western Montana. In late 2024 MTPR built its Browning transmitter, KUFB, in partnership with the Blackfeet Tribe.
MTPR is an NPR affiliate with a Montana news team that includes bureaus in Missoula, the Flathead and Helena, and it produces about half of its own program content. Its local shows and podcasts include The Write Question, Field Notes, Campaign Beat, Musician's Spotlight and The Obit Project, alongside classical, jazz and other music programming and national programs. The network broadcasts to a population of about 500,000 Montanans and is funded largely by its members.
MTPR hires reporters, hosts and newscasters, producers, social media and digital staff, fundraising and sponsorship staff, and engineers, and offers paid internships in news, production, fundraising, digital publishing and engineering. All hiring is coordinated by University of Montana Human Resources, and MTPR positions are posted on the university's job board under the Broadcast Media department.
