Connecticut Public

Connecticut Public is Connecticut's statewide public media service, the PBS and NPR member that runs Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) and Connecticut Public Radio (WNPR) from Hartford and reaches about one million people each month.

Connecticut Public is the statewide public media organization for Connecticut and a member of both PBS and NPR. It is the name under which Connecticut Public Broadcasting, Inc., a locally controlled 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded mainly by individuals, foundations and corporate sponsors, does business. It is the parent of Connecticut Public Television (CPTV), the PBS Kids 24/7 channel and Connecticut Public Radio (WNPR). Its main offices are at 1049 Asylum Avenue in the Asylum Hill neighborhood of Hartford, with additional offices in New Haven and at Fairfield University.

The organization began in 1962 as Connecticut Educational Television, whose first station, WEDH in Hartford, signed on from a Trinity College library basement. It took the Connecticut Public Television name in 1967 and joined PBS when PBS launched in 1970. Its radio network signed on in 1978 and moved to a full-time news and information format in 2006. Today it holds the licenses for the PBS member stations in the state, and the WNPR radio network reaches Connecticut, parts of western Massachusetts and eastern Long Island. Connecticut Public says it serves one million people each month across television, radio and digital platforms, including streaming, podcasts, newsletters, mobile apps and the PBS Passport video service.

Alongside PBS and NPR programming, Connecticut Public produces local and regional news, public affairs and arts and culture programming. Its radio talk shows and podcasts include Where We Live, The Colin McEnroe Show, The Wheelhouse, Disrupted and Audacious, and its television side has produced national PBS programs such as Infinity Hall Live and FAKE: Searching for Truth in the Age of Misinformation. CPTV co-produced Barney and Friends and produced Scientific American Frontiers. Somos Connecticut, its Latino initiative, expands reporting, programming and engagement with Latino communities, including a reporting partnership with GFR Media in Puerto Rico. Connecticut Public is a partner station in the New England News Collaborative, runs community events across the state, and owns MediaVision Creative, a for-profit agency in Norwalk.

Connecticut Public hires across journalism, audio and video production, design, engineering, digital and data, marketing and communications, community engagement and events, fundraising, IT, finance and human resources. It also runs an internship program in its radio, news, marketing and digital departments in Hartford, New Haven and Fairfield, with remote internships possible. Openings are posted on its BambooHR careers site and stay open until filled.
