Prairie Public

Prairie Public is North Dakota's community-owned public media network, a PBS and NPR member based in Fargo. Its statewide television and radio networks serve North Dakota, northwestern Minnesota, eastern Montana and, by cable, southern Manitoba.

Prairie Public Broadcasting, known on air as Prairie Public, is a community-owned, nonprofit public media organization headquartered in Fargo, North Dakota, with a second studio in Bismarck. A member station of both PBS and NPR, it provides television, radio and digital services across North Dakota, northwestern Minnesota and parts of Montana and South Dakota, and reaches southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg, on cable.

Its roots go back to 1959, when the North Central Educational Television Association was incorporated. Flagship station KFME signed on from Fargo on January 19, 1964, as North Dakota's first educational television station. The Prairie Public name was adopted in 1974, when the first satellite station signed on and the statewide network began.

Prairie Public Television is a statewide network of PBS stations, anchored by KFME and a chain of satellite transmitters, with four broadcast channels: the main Prairie Public service, World and Create, the MN Channel of regional programming, and PBS KIDS. The radio network, a statewide NPR service on some ten frequencies, carries three program streams: FM1 with news and classical music, FM2 with roots, rock and jazz, and FM3 on KDSU in Fargo.

The organization produces regional programs and documentaries such as Prairie Pulse, Prairie Mosaic, Main Street, Prairie Beat, Dakota Datebook and Into the Music, and runs education and community work that includes the PBS KIDS Writers Contest and professional development for teachers.

Recent Prairie Public postings have covered broadcast engineering, master control operation, human resources and payroll, and part-time blackjack dealers and bingo workers for its gaming sites, which use their own application form. Its staff also spans news, radio and television production, education, and membership and development. Prairie Public is an EEO/Affirmative Action employer.
