WGVU Public Media is Grand Valley State University's PBS and NPR public media service, broadcasting WGVU-TV, WGVK and WGVU radio to West and Southwest Michigan from studios in downtown Grand Rapids.
WGVU Public Media is the public broadcasting service of Grand Valley State University (GVSU), based at the Meijer Public Broadcast Center in the university's Eberhard Center on its Robert C. Pew Grand Rapids Campus. A member of both PBS and NPR, it serves about 2.5 million people across West and Southwest Michigan, including Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Muskegon.
Its television service is WGVU-TV (channel 35) in Grand Rapids and WGVK (channel 52) in Kalamazoo, which carry PBS programming alongside locally produced arts, culture and lifestyle shows such as Living West Michigan and Kalamazoo Lively Arts. Channel 35 went on the air as WGVC-TV in 1972, and the Kalamazoo transmitter followed in 1984. WGVU radio, heard on 88.5 and 95.3 FM in Grand Rapids and on 95.3 FM in Muskegon, airs NPR news and talk along with local news and programs such as The Shelley Irwin Show, published online at wgvunews.org.
Beyond broadcasting, WGVU's education team works with schools, teachers and families on PBS KIDS, PBS LearningMedia and Michigan Learning Channel resources, and the station hosts community events across the region. Its stated mission is connecting with communities using the strengths of public media to educate, inform, inspire and entertain. It is supported by members and donors, sponsors, grants and appropriations from GVSU.
WGVU staff are Grand Valley State University employees, and the station posts openings on its jobs page and through GVSU's Workday careers site. Its teams cover news and radio, television production, traffic, engineering, development, accounting, promotions, education and community impact, and it offers semester internships to GVSU students.
