WMUK

WMUK is the NPR member station of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, airing news and information on 102.1 FM and Classical WMUK on 89.9 FM and 102.1 HD2 across West Michigan and northern Indiana.

WMUK is a public radio station in Kalamazoo, Michigan, owned and operated by Western Michigan University and licensed to the university's Board of Trustees. Its flagship, WMUK 102.1 FM, is an NPR news and information service broadcasting at 50,000 watts across West Michigan and northern Indiana. Classical WMUK airs around the clock on WKDS 89.9 FM and on the 102.1 HD2 channel. Together the stations are known as WMUK-FM.

The station went on the air in 1951 as WMCR at what was then Western Michigan College, becoming Kalamazoo's first FM station, and took the WMUK call letters in 1961. It was a charter member of NPR in 1971, and its studios have been in Friedmann Hall on WMU's west campus since 1973. In 2020 WMUK refocused 102.1 FM on news and conversation and moved its classical music to the new Classical WMUK service; in 2021 WMU completed its purchase of WKDS-FM as that service's permanent home.

WMUK carries programming from NPR, American Public Media, PRI, the BBC World Service and the CBC alongside local news, arts and culture coverage and music programs. Its mission is to share knowledge, explore ideas and tell compelling stories that engage listeners and communities across West Michigan and beyond. Funding comes from Western Michigan University, listener support, business underwriting and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Station staff are Western Michigan University employees. WMUK hires for news (reporters, hosts and substitute hosts, and paid student news internships), content and music programming, engineering, development and underwriting, and business operations. Station openings are posted on the employment page at wmuk.org, and university positions appear on WMU's jobs site.
