WGCU Public Media is Southwest Florida's source for PBS and NPR and a member-supported service of Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). Its radio and television stations share studios at the Myra Janco Daniels Public Media Center on the FGCU campus in Fort Myers and serve all or part of 12 counties in south and Southwest Florida with five digital TV channels, three radio services and several digital platforms.
WGCU (channel 30) is the region's PBS member station; its subchannels carry PBS, World, Create, The Florida Channel and PBS Kids. WGCU-FM (90.1) is an NPR member station with a news and information format and classical music on its HD2 channel, and WMKO (91.7) on Marco Island simulcasts it for the Naples area. WGCU belongs to the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network, whose member stations stay on the air through serious weather and other emergencies.
Public television and radio came to the region in 1983 as WSFP-TV and WSFP-FM, services of the University of South Florida's Fort Myers campus. FGCU took over both stations on July 1, 1996, and they became WGCU. Local productions include the nightly news program Southwest Florida in Focus, the weekday radio program Gulf Coast Life and the Untold Stories history documentaries. In fiscal year 2024 the television station reported $9.74 million in revenue and 13,471 members.
WGCU hires journalists, TV hosts and reporters, producers, development and corporate sponsorship staff, and broadcast operations staff such as traffic managers. Staff are Florida Gulf Coast University employees, and openings are posted on the university's Workday careers site.
