Michigan Public, known until its rebrand as Michigan Radio, is the public radio network licensed to the Regents of the University of Michigan and operated through the university's broadcasting arm, Michigan Public Media. Its mission is to uncover the facts, share the stories, and create the connections that give meaning to our complex world, as part of a vision for an informed and engaged Michigan.
The network airs news and information 24 hours a day, seven days a week on five FM signals: WUOM 91.7 FM in Ann Arbor and Southeast Michigan, WFUM 91.1 FM in Flint, WVGR 104.1 FM in Grand Rapids and West Michigan, WRSX 91.3 FM in Port Huron and WLNZ 89.7 FM in Lansing. Together they cover most of the southern Lower Peninsula, from Muskegon to Detroit, and the station's reach extends through its news website, online streaming, mobile apps, podcasts and social media.
Michigan Public is a founding member of NPR and carries national and international programming from NPR, American Public Media and the BBC alongside its own local journalism, including the daily program Stateside. Its journalists work from news bureaus in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Flint and Grand Rapids.
The University of Michigan signed WUOM on the air in July 1948, one of the first educational institutions in the country to hold an FM license. The main studio is in the former Argus Camera building on West William Street in Ann Arbor, with a studio at the University of Michigan-Flint and offices at the Meijer Public Broadcast Center in Grand Rapids.
Michigan Public staff are University of Michigan employees, and openings are posted on the university's careers site. Recent hires have included producers and reporters, technical operations and engineering staff, audience engagement roles, corporate support account executives and annual giving officers.
