Its broadcast licenses are held by the Florida State University Board of Trustees, and its funding comes from individual members, business underwriters, federal and state government, Florida State University and grants.
On television, WFSU operates two stations that share the WFSU Public Media name: WFSU-TV in Tallahassee and WFSG in Panama City. The lineup includes PBS national programming, PBS KIDS, Create, The Florida Channel (the state government programming service that WFSU runs) and 4fsu, Florida State University's educational access cable channel, along with live and on-demand streaming. The signal reaches from Okaloosa County in the west to Taylor and Madison Counties in the east and into most of the western counties of South Georgia.
On radio, WFSU-FM 88.9 in Tallahassee and WFSW 89.1 in Panama City carry NPR news and local programs such as Perspectives, a weekly local affairs talk show, and Capital Report, a magazine program on news from around the state. WFSQ 91.5 in Tallahassee and WFSL 90.7 in Thomasville, Georgia, play classical music around the clock. WFSU's coverage of the Florida Legislature and state government is carried statewide through the Florida Public Radio Network, which serves thirteen public radio stations. WFSU is also the parent organization of The Florida Center for Interactive Media.
The organization began on January 21, 1949, as WFSU 660 AM, a student-run campus radio station, and returned as WFSU-FM 91.5 in 1954. WFSU-FM was a charter member of NPR in 1970. WFSU-TV Channel 11 signed on from a small campus studio on September 20, 1960, and WFSG in Panama City followed in 1988.
WFSU produces local news, public affairs, education and community programming, and hires for journalism and production, broadcast operations and engineering, education and outreach, membership, underwriting and finance and administration. Positions are Florida State University jobs: openings are listed on WFSU's careers page, applications go through the FSU jobs portal at jobs.fsu.edu, and full-time staff receive State of Florida university system benefits.
