WEDU PBS is the PBS member station for West Central Florida and the Tampa Bay area. It is owned by Florida West Coast Public Broadcasting, Inc., a nonprofit financially supported by the community, and works from the Berkman Family Broadcast Center on North Boulevard in Tampa. The station reaches 16 counties, and its mission is to educate, explore and engage to inspire a lifetime of learning and discovery.
WEDU signed on October 27, 1958, as an educational service for area schools, founded by education leaders from the surrounding counties. In 2017 it took over the programming of the University of South Florida's WUSF-TV when the university sold that station's spectrum, and the license passed to Florida West Coast Public Broadcasting as sister station WEDQ. The two stations share a transmitter in Riverview and carry PBS, PBS Kids, Create, World Channel and NHK World-Japan on six subchannels.
Beyond broadcast, WEDU produces digital-first video, runs educational outreach for children, parents and educators, publishes Premiere, a monthly member magazine, and rents out its studios, remote production truck and event space. Local productions include the public affairs program Florida This Week, Suncoast Business Forum and the Greater series of digital shorts about individual communities. The station says its work reaches more than 6.4 million viewers, listeners and readers.
WEDU hires for content and production, digital media, membership and development, education, and finance and business roles. Applications and resumes go to jobs@wedu.org, and employment includes a background check and drug test.
