South Florida PBS, Inc. is a nonprofit public media organization that operates the PBS member stations WPBT2 in Miami and WXEL in the West Palm Beach area, along with the low-power station WURH-LD. It describes itself as Florida's largest public media company, reaching approximately 6.3 million viewers from Key West to the Sebastian Inlet and from the Atlantic Ocean west to Lake Okeechobee.
The organization was formed in 2015 when the Community Television Foundation of South Florida, which put WPBT on the air in 1955, merged with the WXEL Public Broadcasting Corporation. WPBT2's studios are in North Miami and WXEL's are in Boynton Beach, and staff also work from an office in Coral Gables.
Beyond its broadcast channels, South Florida PBS runs the South Florida PBS Kids and Health Channel streams, produces programs such as Check, Please! South Florida, Changing Seas, Your South Florida, Art Loft, KidVision and Star Gazers, and stages immersive, location-based exhibitions. Its mission is to empower and connect South Florida's diverse communities through trustworthy broadcast and digital content, experiential learning and community engagement, particularly for children and the underserved.
South Florida PBS hires in development and major gifts, grant writing, finance, human resources and production (producers, videographers, editors and sound recordists, often on a freelance basis), as well as event staff for its immersive experiences, and offers for-credit internships to college students.
