Interlochen Public Radio (IPR) is the public radio network for northern Michigan. Its studios are at 9350 Lyon Street in Interlochen, across from the main campus of Interlochen Center for the Arts and just outside Traverse City. The station signed on in 1963 as WIAA, a dream of Interlochen founder Joseph E. Maddy, with a staff of five and an eight-hour broadcast day, and in 1971 it became a charter member of NPR. IPR is licensed to and operated by Interlochen Center for the Arts, the nonprofit that also runs Interlochen Arts Academy and Interlochen Arts Camp.
IPR runs two services. Classical IPR presents classical music with local and national news updates, along with performances from Interlochen and around the world, on WIAA 88.7 FM in Interlochen, WIAB 88.5 FM in Mackinaw City and 94.7 FM in Traverse City, reaching more than 20 counties from above the Mackinac Bridge south to Big Rapids. IPR News Radio offers continuous local, national and world news on WICA 91.5 FM in Traverse City, WLMN 89.7 FM in Manistee and Ludington, and WHBP 90.1 FM in Harbor Springs and Petoskey, covering eleven counties.
The IPR newsroom produces the Points North podcast, a two-time National Edward R. Murrow Award winner, and the Up North Lowdown news podcast, while Classical IPR makes local programs such as Intermezzo for children and families and the listener-curated Music by Request. The station states its mission as connecting northern Michigan and the world: building a thriving music community, developing excellence in journalism and reaching an expanding global audience.
Recent IPR openings have included a reporter focused on community engagement and the station newsletter, a music host and digital content producer, and a music host and librarian, and Classical IPR also runs a fellowship. IPR staff are employees of Interlochen Center for the Arts, and station jobs are posted on the Center's careers portal.
