WVPE

WVPE is the NPR member station for Michiana, broadcasting at 88.1 FM from Elkhart, Indiana, to 17 counties in north central Indiana and southwestern Michigan. The station is licensed to Elkhart Community Schools.

WVPE (88.1 FM) is a non-commercial, member-supported public radio station in Elkhart, Indiana, and the NPR member station for Michiana, the region of north central Indiana and southwestern lower Michigan that includes Elkhart, South Bend and Notre Dame. Its 11,500 watt signal reaches 17 counties with a combined population of about one million, and its studios are in the Elkhart Area Career Center.

The station signed on in 1972 as a student-run broadcast laboratory at the Elkhart Area Career Center. It remains licensed to, and a member-supported service of, Elkhart Community Schools, whose elected Board of School Trustees provides its ultimate supervision, and the Friends of WVPE, Inc. serves as its community advisory board. WVPE joined NPR in 1991 and moved to an all-NPR news format on weekdays in 1995.

The schedule pairs NPR news and talk with locally produced programming, including the weekly Michiana Matters and the Michiana Chronicles commentaries, along with jazz, blues and folk music. Local reporting also airs on Indiana Public Broadcasting, NPR and the Michigan Public Radio Network. In 2015 WVPE added two HD channels: NEWS2, a second news and talk service, and BLUES3, an all-blues channel begun with the Career Center's audio and video production class. The station's stated mission is to be a vital communications resource that educates, entertains and inspires the communities it serves.

WVPE hires for news reporting and editing and for on-air announcing and hosting. Its openings are posted on the Elkhart Community Schools applicant tracking system under the Radio Station category.
