Alabama Public Television (APT) is a statewide network of nine PBS member television stations serving Alabama. It is operated by the Alabama Educational Television Commission (AETC), an agency of the Alabama state government created by the Legislature in 1953, which holds the licenses for the network's stations. APT's offices and network operations center are in Birmingham, and it keeps studios in Montgomery, including a small studio at the Alabama State House.
The network began broadcasting in 1955, and with the sign-on of WBIQ in Birmingham that year Alabama became the first state with an educational television network. Its stations, WAIQ Montgomery, WBIQ Birmingham, WCIQ Mount Cheaha, WDIQ Dozier, WEIQ Mobile, WFIQ Florence, WGIQ Louisville, WHIQ Huntsville and WIIQ Demopolis, air the same programming and reach almost all of Alabama as well as parts of Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee. Alongside the main PBS service, APT broadcasts APT Create, APT World and PBS Kids. Since 1977 the AETC has also operated public radio station WLRH (89.3 FM) in Huntsville.
APT produces public affairs, cultural, natural history and documentary programming, including the statehouse program Capitol Journal, and provides broadcast and online education services for classrooms, teacher professional development and electronic field trips for K-12 students. Its mission also includes working with Homeland Security and state agencies to carry emergency information statewide.
APT posts staff openings for both APT and WLRH on its employment page. Recent postings have included broadcast engineering and IT, radio programming and production, education and early childhood training, digital media and social content production, communications, development and corporate support, finance, and executive leadership. APT also offers unpaid student internships in Birmingham in digital media, education, IT, public information and promotions, and human resources.
