WABE is metro Atlanta's nonprofit NPR and PBS member organization, operating 90.1 FM WABE, WABE TV on channel 30, WABE.org, podcasts and events from its studios on Bismark Road in Atlanta.
WABE is the nonprofit public media organization for metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia. It operates 90.1 FM WABE, the area's NPR member station, and WABE TV on channel 30, a PBS member station, along with WABE.org, the WABE mobile app, numerous podcasts and community events. WABE describes itself as 100 percent independent and 100 percent nonprofit, and its mission is to inform, inspire, reflect and empower the greater Atlanta community.
WABE radio signed on in September 1948 as Georgia's first public radio station; its call letters stand for the Atlanta Board of Education, which still holds the license. The television station signed on in February 1958 as WETV, Georgia's first public television station, and later broadcast as WPBA, known for years as PBA 30. In January 2022 Public Broadcasting Atlanta, which operates both stations for Atlanta Public Schools, brought the stations, websites, podcasts and apps together under the single name WABE. The nonprofit Atlanta Educational Telecommunications Collaborative, formed in 1994, supports the stations financially and through volunteers.
WABE carries NPR and PBS programming alongside local journalism, radio shows, podcasts and television programs, including the talk program Closer Look, the Peabody Award winning podcast Buried Truths and the concert series Sounds Like ATL. Its signal reaches most of northwestern and north central Georgia, and member donations are its most important source of support.
WABE hires for its newsroom and for production, marketing, underwriting, development and fundraising, engineering, information technology, finance and human resources roles. It also runs a student internship program in radio news, production, marketing and information technology.
