WWOZ 90.7 FM is the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Station, a listener-supported, volunteer-programmed community radio station based in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Its mission is to be the worldwide voice, archive and flag-bearer of New Orleans culture and musical heritage.
The station went on the air on December 4, 1980, founded by brothers Jerry and Walter Brock, and first broadcast from above the music club Tipitina's. It later moved to Louis Armstrong Park in the Treme neighborhood, and since November 2023 its studios and offices have occupied the top floor of the Jax Brewery building in the French Quarter. By 1987 the license had passed to Friends of WWOZ, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation to operate the station. The Foundation appoints the station's governance board and backs its financial and operational stability.
WWOZ broadcasts at 100,000 watts from a tower in the Central Business District, reaching greater New Orleans, the River Parishes and the Northshore, and streams worldwide 24 hours a day with a two-week online archive. Programming covers jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, brass band, gospel, Cajun, zydeco, Caribbean, Latin, Brazilian, African, bluegrass and Irish music. The station is the flagship broadcaster of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, carrying it live from start to finish, and broadcasts live from other local festivals and events. Its online work includes the Livewire Music Calendar, the A Closer Walk music history map, Groovapedia, a live video stream and the 'OZone monthly newsletter.
All of WWOZ's show hosts are volunteers, with more than 250 on the roster, supported by a small professional staff that runs broadcast operations and administration. Staff roles span general management and finance, content and music direction, operations and engineering, digital content and new media, video, membership, events and sponsorship, underwriting sales, volunteer and community engagement, and office management. The station notes that most of its staff members began as volunteers.
