WBGO

WBGO (88.3 FM, "Jazz 88") is a public radio station licensed to Newark, New Jersey, and operated by Newark Public Radio, Inc., an independent, community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit governed by a Board of Trustees. Its studios and offices are at 54 Park Place (Wayne Shorter Way) in downtown Newark, and its transmitter sits atop 4 Times Square in Manhattan. The signal covers all five boroughs of New York City and North Jersey, reaching from Rockland and Westchester counties in New York south to Ocean County, New Jersey, and east to Nassau County.

A group of Newark civic activists founded Newark Public Radio in 1979 with help from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, taking over a license first granted to the Newark Board of Education in 1947, and made WBGO the first public radio station in New Jersey. The station affiliated with NPR and moved to a 24-hour schedule in 1980.

Most of WBGO's air time is jazz, along with blues and R&B, and an HD2 channel, The Jazz Bee, adds more jazz. A news department produces drive-time newscasts and the weekly public affairs magazine WBGO Journal, and the station carries NPR news programming. WBGO has produced syndicated programs for public radio since 1985, including JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater for 23 years, and now co-produces Jazz Night in America with NPR Music and Jazz at Lincoln Center. It streams worldwide at wbgo.org and reports a weekly audience of more than one million across broadcast, streaming and social platforms. The station also presents concerts, jazz travel and events, and a free Kids Jazz Concert Series, and is funded mainly by listener members together with corporate, foundation and government support.
