WUWM 89.7 FM, branded Milwaukee's NPR, is a public radio station and NPR member station based in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It signed on September 24, 1964, as a place for students to train for broadcasting careers and became a charter member of NPR in 1971. The station is licensed to the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System and operated by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of Letters and Science. Its studios and offices are in the Chase Tower on East Wisconsin Avenue.
WUWM's signal covers 13 counties in southeastern Wisconsin, reaching north to Sheboygan, west to Madison and south to Gurnee, Illinois. The station reaches more than 100,000 people a week over the air and about 200,000 more each month through its stream, app, podcasts, newsletter and website. It is the largest NPR member station in Wisconsin outside the statewide Wisconsin Public Radio network. Alongside national and international programming from NPR, APM and the BBC, WUWM produces local news and Lake Effect, a weekday hour of local interviews and conversation. Its mission is to weave the stories of southeastern Wisconsin together to engage, inspire and connect people with a shared understanding of each other, the region and the world.
WUWM is member supported: most of its funding comes from listener donations, foundations and business sponsorships, and its funds are managed and invested by the UWM Foundation. The station staff and its Market Enginuity underwriting team number about 30 people. Staff are UW-Milwaukee employees, and openings are posted on the station's Work at WUWM page and on the university's job site. The station hires reporters, producers, digital and communications staff and content leadership, runs the yearlong Eric Von Broadcast Fellowship for recent college graduates, and offers internships to UW-Milwaukee students in its digital department.
