Wisconsin Public Radio

Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) is a statewide public radio network headquartered on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus at 821 University Avenue in Madison. It is a service of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Wisconsin Educational Communications Board, with support from the Wisconsin Public Radio Association, and it is an NPR member. Within the university, WPR is part of Wisconsin Public Media, the UW-Madison division that also runs PBS Wisconsin.

WPR traces its roots to 9XM, the experimental station founded by University of Wisconsin professors Edward Bennett and Earle M. Terry. The station, which became WHA, began broadcasting to the public in 1917, and WHA 970 AM in Madison still carries WPR News today. The network took the Wisconsin Public Radio name in 1971, when it became a charter member of National Public Radio.

Today WPR programs two networks on 39 stations. WPR News pairs WPR's own reporting with NPR and BBC coverage, and WPR Music offers locally hosted classical music seven days a week with jazz, world and folk music on weekends. Reporters and hosts work from bureaus in Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, Wausau, La Crosse, Eau Claire and Superior, and the stations reach about 330,000 Wisconsin listeners each week. WPR also holds community events around the state and runs special projects such as Wisconsin Remembers: A Face for Every Name, a partnership with the Wisconsin Veterans Museum.

WPR hires journalists, hosts and producers for its news and music networks and staff who support its community events and operations, and it trains new journalists through three newsroom fellowships focused on early career reporting, investigative reporting and diverse perspectives. WPR staff are University of Wisconsin-Madison employees: regular openings are posted on the UW-Madison jobs site and student positions at the UW-Madison Student Job Center.
