WTJX is the public broadcaster of the United States Virgin Islands. It is run by the Virgin Islands Public Broadcasting System and operates WTJX-TV, the territory's PBS member television station on channel 12, and WTJX-FM 93.1, its NPR member radio station. Both stations are licensed to Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas, and the call letters stand for the three main islands: St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix.
WTJX-TV signed on August 29, 1972, and WTJX-FM followed on January 12, 2015. The two stations share studios on Haypiece Hill in Charlotte Amalie, and a translator, W05AW-D, carries the television signal to Christiansted on St. Croix, where WTJX moved into a larger facility with a full studio, control room and editing bays in 2007. WTJX-TV carries PBS, PBS Kids and WTJX Business on its digital subchannels. WTJX-FM carries NPR programming, with an Afrobeats service, WTJX Afro, on its HD2 channel. Local offerings include the WTJX Radio NewsFeed, daily local news coverage on its website and the Analyze This podcast.
The System is governed by a Board of Directors, and its Chief Executive Officer is responsible for day-to-day operations. The Virgin Islands Legislature appropriates, and the territory's Executive Branch allots, most of the money that runs it, and it also receives funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Its stated mission is to partner with individuals, foundations, corporations and government agencies on community engagement projects that improve the quality of life for everyone in the Virgin Islands.
Its staff covers television and radio production, news, engineering, development and finance. Recent openings have included a Director of Development and Fundraising on St. Thomas and production crew roles, such as technical assistants and on-call videographers who set up and operate studio and field equipment on St. Thomas and St. Croix. Openings are posted on the WTJX employment page.
