WRVO Public Media

WRVO Public Media is the NPR member network for central and northern New York, licensed to the State University of New York and based on the SUNY Oswego campus, with regional news and NPR programming on 13 frequencies across more than 20 counties.

WRVO Public Media is a non-profit, non-commercial, multi-platform news and information service and an NPR member station serving central and northern New York. It is licensed to the State University of New York, whose Board of Trustees holds its broadcast licenses, and operates as a department of the State University of New York at Oswego. Its broadcast studios and administrative offices are on the SUNY Oswego campus in Oswego, New York, with a satellite studio at the SUNY Oswego Syracuse campus. The flagship station, WRVO 89.9 FM, signed on in 1969; its call letters stand for "Radio Voice of Oswego."

WRVO's signals cover more than 20 counties from stations in Oswego (WRVO 89.9), Syracuse (WRVD 90.3), Utica (WRVN 91.9), Watertown (WRVJ 91.7), Clayton (WRVH 89.3) and Fenner (WMVQ 90.5), with frequencies shared with Colgate University in Hamilton (WRCU 90.1) and with SUNY Cortland in Cortland (WSUC 90.5), and low-power repeaters in Ithaca, Rome, Geneva and Norwich. It runs three program streams: WRVO-1, NPR News, heard on 13 frequencies, online, on smart speakers and through the station's mobile app; WRVO-2, PRX Remix; and WRVO-3, WRVO International, which carries the BBC World Service.

Programming pairs regional news and public affairs from the WRVO newsroom with national programs from NPR, American Public Media, PRX and the BBC, including Morning Edition and All Things Considered, and the nightly old-time radio program Tuned to Yesterday. The website wrvo.org carries local, regional, national and international news, podcasts and updates on the status of the station's transmitters.

WRVO's professional staff includes full-time employees and freelance journalists working in news, production, engineering, membership, underwriting and digital roles. Staff are employed through SUNY Oswego or the Research Foundation for SUNY, and openings are posted on wrvo.org and on SUNY Oswego's employment site; a recent search was for a news reporter and producer. The station also runs an internship program for SUNY Oswego students in journalism, production, engineering and other media fields, and says it gives priority to building a staff that reflects the communities it serves.
