Educational Communications Board
Wisconsin state agency that operates the statewide Wisconsin Public Radio and PBS Wisconsin networks with UW-Madison, running their transmission system, plus the state's NOAA Weather Radio stations and Emergency Alert System backbone.
The Educational Communications Board (ECB) is an independent State of Wisconsin agency, overseen by a board of directors and based at 3319 West Beltline Highway in Madison. It is charged with planning, developing, constructing and operating noncommercial radio and television broadcasting systems for educational, informational and public service programming, and public safety communications, for the people of Wisconsin.
In partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison, ECB operates the Wisconsin Public Radio and PBS Wisconsin networks, ensuring that public media and education services reach a statewide audience. The agency's work centers on the technical infrastructure and delivery of those services: it oversees more than 60 FCC-licensed broadcast and support stations, including radio and television transmitters, translators and satellite earth stations. ECB also supports public media's K-12 initiatives, including the classroom resources now offered through PBS Wisconsin Education.
ECB maintains the 28 NOAA Weather Radio transmitter stations in Wisconsin and serves as the technical backbone of the state's Emergency Alert System, including AMBER Alerts and the non-weather emergency alerts it delivers with the Division of Emergency Management of the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs. It also offers contractual technical services for telecommunications facilities at Wisconsin schools.
As a state agency, ECB hires through the State of Wisconsin's job system. Its openings span information technology, broadcast engineering and telecommunications, finance, education and agency leadership, and its employees receive State of Wisconsin benefits, including membership in the Wisconsin Retirement System. The agency has hired many military veterans for its technical staff. PBS Wisconsin and Wisconsin Public Radio post their own openings separately.
