WFYI Public Media

WFYI Public Media is the nonprofit NPR and PBS member station for Central Indiana, operating WFYI 90.1 FM and WFYI TV 20 in Indianapolis and, through its licensee Metropolitan Indianapolis Public Media, WBAA in West Lafayette.

WFYI Public Media is a nonprofit public media organization in Indianapolis, Indiana, serving Central Indiana with trusted journalism, inspiring stories and lifelong learning. It is run by Metropolitan Indianapolis Public Media, Inc., a community licensee, from its headquarters at 1630 N. Meridian St., north of downtown Indianapolis. Its stated vision is an informed, inspired and inclusive Indiana.

WFYI Public Television (channel 20) signed on October 4, 1970, after a grassroots campaign led by Ardath Y. Burkhart, known as "Ardath's Army," raised its first year of operating funds. The PBS member station broadcasts three channels: WFYI 1 (20.1) with the main PBS schedule, WFYI 2 (20.2) with PBS KIDS around the clock, and WFYI 3 (20.3) with how-to and locally produced programs, and it added an ATSC 3.0 (NextGen TV) signal in 2022. Its broadcast signal and cable carriage reach nearly two million households. WFYI 90.1 FM, which took its call letters in 1988 after the organization acquired the station from Indianapolis Public Schools, is the NPR member station for Central Indiana, carrying NPR and BBC programming alongside local news, arts and culture and public affairs shows, with an alternative service, The Point, on HD2.

Beyond Indianapolis, Metropolitan Indianapolis Public Media took over Purdue University's WBAA and WBAA-FM in West Lafayette in 2022, and since July 2026 Lakeshore Public Media's WLPR-FM in Northwest Indiana has simulcast WBAA under a partnership with the organization. WFYI also produces local programs such as Indiana Week in Review, runs the WFYI Live events series and supports The Economic Club of Indiana's luncheon series.

More than 80 people work at WFYI. It hires across news and content (reporters, including an education beat, and digital content and video producers), marketing and events, development and institutional giving, and finance, and it offers semester internships in news reporting, digital content and video, and marketing and events. Openings are posted on its careers page and its ApplicantStack job board.
