Lakeshore Public Media

Lakeshore Public Media is the nonprofit public broadcaster for Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland, operating Lakeshore PBS (WYIN, channel 56) and Lakeshore Public Radio (WLPR-FM 89.1) from its studios in Merrillville, Indiana.

Lakeshore Public Media is the public broadcaster for Northwest Indiana and the Chicago area, based at 8625 Indiana Place in Merrillville, Indiana. Its legal name is Northwest Indiana Public Broadcasting, Inc., a 501(c)(3) community nonprofit that holds the licenses for Lakeshore PBS (WYIN) and Lakeshore Public Radio (WLPR-FM). It is a member of Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations.

Lakeshore PBS, WYIN channel 56, is licensed to Gary and signed on November 15, 1987. It is one of two PBS member stations in the Chicago television market, alongside WTTW, and carries NHK World on its second channel.

Lakeshore Public Radio, WLPR-FM 89.1, is licensed to Lowell and has carried NPR programming for Northwest Indiana since Northwest Indiana Public Broadcasting acquired the station in 2009. After federal and state funding cuts reduced Lakeshore's budget by nearly 38 percent, 89.1 FM began simulcasting WBAA News from Greater Lafayette on July 6, 2026, through a shared-service partnership with WFYI's parent, Metropolitan Indianapolis Public Media. Lakeshore keeps the license, its board and its leadership, and continues to raise support for its own stations.

Its mission is to be the recognized media resource for citizens of all ages to experience life-long learning, celebrate human diversity and engage in civic concerns. Across television, radio and digital platforms it offers local news, community events and local productions such as Regionally Speaking, Eye on the Arts, Midwest Beat and Art on the Air.

Lakeshore Public Media is an equal opportunity employer. Its staff and openings span broadcast engineering and transmission maintenance, television production, programming, radio operations, membership and development, and office administration, along with news internships.
