Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations (IPBS)

Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations (IPBS) is a nonprofit association of Indiana's 17 public radio and television stations, founded in 1979 and based in Indianapolis, that partners on education, public safety and statewide public affairs programming.

Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations, Inc. (IPBS) is a nonprofit consortium of Indiana's public radio and television stations, established in 1979 and based in Indianapolis. Its 17 locally managed members, nine NPR radio stations and eight PBS television stations, reach about 95 percent of Indiana households, and IPBS reports that 2.5 million Hoosiers use their broadcast, digital and in-person content each week.

The member stations are WFYI-FM and WFYI-TV in Indianapolis, WFIU and WTIU in Bloomington, WNIN-FM and WNIN-TV in Evansville, WVUB and WVUT in Vincennes, WBST and WIPB in Muncie, WBAA in West Lafayette, WBOI and WFWA in Fort Wayne, WVPE in Elkhart, WNIT in South Bend, and WLPR and WYIN in Merrillville.

IPBS and its members partner on education, public safety and civic affairs work. Through a partnership with the State of Indiana and its Department of Education that dates back about 50 years, the member television stations carry PBS KIDS and offer PBS LearningMedia, early literacy tools, STEM resources, civics explainers and career pathway content. The stations have also used datacasting over their broadcast spectrum to send instructional files to students without home internet. For public safety, they carry EAS severe weather and AMBER alerts and dedicate spectrum to datacasting for first responders, including the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet).

On the civic side, IPBS produces and distributes the governor's State of the State address, the chief justice's State of the Judiciary address and the State of Higher Education address, and member stations produce statewide public affairs programs such as Indiana Lawmakers and Indiana Week in Review. The stations also collaborate on statewide reporting as Indiana Public Broadcasting News (IPB News).

IPBS itself has a small administrative staff in Indianapolis and lists its own openings on its employment page at ipbs.org/jobs. Most public media jobs in Indiana are with the member stations, which hire and post openings separately.
