Spokane Public Radio is a community-licensed nonprofit NPR member in Spokane, Washington, operating SPR News (KPBX 91.1), SPR Classical (KSFC 91.9) and SPR Jazz (KPBZ 90.3) for listeners across the Inland Northwest since 1980.
Spokane Public Radio (SPR) is an independent, listener-supported nonprofit and NPR member station based in Spokane, Washington. It owns and operates three noncommercial FM services: SPR News on KPBX 91.1, SPR Classical on KSFC 91.9 and SPR Jazz on KPBZ 90.3. Since an August 2025 programming realignment, KPBX carries news and talk, KSFC classical music and KPBZ jazz.
Through a network of full-power repeaters and translators, including KSFC's translator in Coeur d'Alene and its repeater KXJO in St. Maries, Idaho, SPR's signals reach listeners in eastern Washington, northern Idaho, northeastern Oregon, western Montana and southern British Columbia. The station describes its reach as some 750 communities.
SPR traces its roots to a 10-watt volunteer station that began in a basement on Spokane's South Hill in the early 1970s. The Spokane Public Broadcasting Association then raised the money for a full-power, community-licensed station, and KPBX signed on January 20, 1980. The license is held by Spokane Public Radio, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Since January 2016 SPR has broadcast from the historic Fire Station No. 3 at Monroe and Sharp, renovated through its Moving to a Sound Future capital campaign and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The station's mission is to provide high-quality artistic, educational and informational programming that enhances the cultural life and civic discourse of its communities. Alongside NPR and BBC World Service programming, SPR runs a local newsroom covering Spokane and the region, local music programs, community forums, a community calendar and free Kids' Concerts.
SPR employs reporters and news leadership, on-air hosts and producers, music programmers and broadcast engineers, along with staff in membership, business support and underwriting, and volunteer and outreach work. The station posts openings on its Employment Opportunities page.
