Boise State Public Radio is a listener-supported NPR member station and a broadcast service of Boise State University, headquartered at the Ron and Linda Yanke Family Research Park in Boise, Idaho. It traces its roots to a Boise Junior College amateur radio club and marks 1977, when it began broadcasting as a noncommercial FM station, as its inaugural year. It became an NPR affiliate in 1988 and joined Boise State University's Division of Extended Studies in 2016.
The station runs separate news and music services. 91.5 FM (KBSX) is Boise State Public Radio News, carrying NPR programs alongside local news and interviews, and 90.3 FM (KBSU) is Boise State Public Radio Music, with classical music, jazz and locally hosted music programs; a full-time jazz service airs on KBSK in McCall. With more than 30 broadcast signals, the network reaches listeners across Idaho, from Boise and Twin Falls to McCall, Sun Valley, Lewiston and Pocatello, as well as parts of eastern Oregon and northern Nevada. It also streams online, through its own app and on smart speakers.
Boise State Public Radio produces Idaho Matters, its weekday public affairs program, and is the lead station for the Mountain West News Bureau, a regional collaboration of public media newsrooms in Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. Its staff also includes Indigenous affairs journalists for Our Living Lands, and it produces podcasts and digital content. In 2020 it established The Endowment for Local News. More than half of its funding comes from audience donations and local business support.
Staff roles span news (reporters, hosts, producers, editors and a news director), programming and music hosting, podcast production, digital content and social media, broadcast engineering, development and corporate support, events, and business operations. As a unit of Boise State University, it hires through the university's job system, and it accepts newsroom interns on a rolling basis, with preference given to Boise State students.
