KGNU Community Radio is an independent, noncommercial community radio station licensed in Boulder and Denver, Colorado. Its licensee is the Boulder Community Broadcast Association, Inc., a nonprofit whose board of directors is legally responsible for the station and hires the station manager, who in turn hires the rest of the staff. KGNU relies on its audience for financial support.
KGNU-FM signed on at 88.5 FM in Boulder on May 24, 1978, from a one-room cottage along Boulder Creek. In 2004 the association bought AM 1390 in Denver, which took the KGNU call letters. Today the station is heard on 88.5 FM (Boulder, Boulder County and north Denver), 1390 AM (greater Denver), 99.1 FM (central Denver), 98.7 FM (Fort Collins) and 93.7 FM (Nederland and the Peak to Peak Highway), and online through a live stream, a 24/7 music stream, on-demand programs and a mobile app. In May 2026 KGNU opened its new Community Media and Cultural Center on 14th Street in downtown Boulder.
KGNU's mission is to stimulate, educate and entertain its audience, to reflect the diversity of the local and world community, and to provide a channel for individuals, groups, issues and music that have been overlooked, suppressed or under-represented by other media. Its programming mixes music, local news and public affairs with syndicated programs from sources such as Pacifica Radio and the BBC World Service, and its local shows are hosted by volunteers. KGNU helped found the Grassroots Radio Coalition in 1996.
The station runs on community volunteers coordinated by paid staff: in 2026 it described a paid staff of eight working with more than 300 volunteers. Staff roles include station manager, news director, operations director, music director, Denver program manager, membership coordinator, underwriting manager, and digital content and strategy manager, and recent openings have included a news and public affairs director and a membership coordinator. KGNU posts job openings on its careers page with application procedures and a deadline, and lists internships for university students through Handshake. KGNU is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
