KCUR 89.3 is Kansas City's NPR member station. It first went on the air on October 21, 1957, from the campus of the University of Kansas City, the forerunner of the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), and in 1971 it became a charter member of NPR. Its 100,000-watt signal covers the Kansas City metropolitan area and parts of Missouri and Kansas.
The station reports on local government, politics, education, health care, and arts and culture across the region. Its local programming includes Up To Date, a daily public affairs talk show, and KCUR Studios, which produces podcasts such as the daily news podcast Kansas City Today, the food history series Hungry for MO and the narrative series A People's History of Kansas City. KCUR also publishes the weekly Adventure! email newsletter about exploring the Kansas City region, directs the Kansas News Service in partnership with KMUW, Kansas Public Radio and High Plains Public Radio, and hosts The Midwest Newsroom, a regional reporting partnership with Iowa Public Radio, Nebraska Public Media News, St. Louis Public Radio and NPR.
In 2020 KCUR completed its purchase of 91.9 FM (KWJC) from William Jewell College and launched Classical KC, a classical music station. Both stations are licensed to the University of Missouri Board of Curators and operate as a service of UMKC. In February 2025 UMKC announced plans to transfer KCUR and Classical KC to an independent, community-based nonprofit.
KCUR hires journalists, editors, producers, hosts and announcers, along with staff in marketing, events, development and finance. It runs the paid Aviva Okeson-Haberman Internship Program for students and recent graduates in news, Up To Date, KCUR Studios, and marketing and events, and it contracts regularly with freelance writers, audio producers and graphic designers.
