Kansas Public Radio
Kansas Public Radio (KPR) is the NPR member network of the University of Kansas, broadcasting news, classical music and jazz from Lawrence to northeast and central Kansas and the Kansas City area on KANU 91.5 FM and its sister stations.
Kansas Public Radio (KPR) is a public radio network based in Lawrence, Kansas, and licensed to the University of Kansas. Its flagship station, KANU 91.5 FM, signed on September 15, 1952, became the first noncommercial FM station to broadcast in stereo in 1961, and was a charter member of NPR, carrying the first broadcast of All Things Considered in 1971. The Kansas Public Radio name began with the station's Statehouse news bureau in 1990 and has identified the whole network since 2003.
KPR serves northeast and central Kansas and much of the Kansas City area. Alongside KANU, whose 100,000-watt signal covers Lawrence, Topeka and Kansas City, it operates KANH 89.7 FM in Emporia, KANV 91.3 FM in Junction City and Olsburg, and KANQ 90.3 FM in Chanute, plus translators in Atchison, Lawrence and Manhattan. The main service carries NPR news, classical music and jazz. KPR2, a second service of NPR and BBC news and talk, airs on HD2 and on translators in Lawrence and Manhattan.
KPR produces local news and music programming, including state government coverage from a full-time Statehouse bureau in Topeka and music programs such as Jazz in the Night, Trail Mix and the internationally syndicated Retro Cocktail Hour, and it carries regional reporting from the Kansas News Service and Harvest Public Media. Its program The American Past won a Peabody Award in 1974. KPR shares Broadcasting Hall on the KU campus with its sister service Audio-Reader, a reading service for people who are blind or print disabled that broadcasts on a KPR subcarrier.
KPR staff are University of Kansas employees and take part in KU benefits programs. The station hires for news, on-air hosting and production, programming, development and membership roles, and employs paid student staff and interns. Open positions at KPR and Audio-Reader are posted through the University of Kansas employment site.
