Iowa PBS is Iowa's statewide public television network, a state agency based in Johnston that runs nine PBS stations, produces Iowa Press and Market to Market, and serves Iowans through education and engagement, with support from the Iowa PBS Foundation.
Iowa PBS is Iowa's statewide public television network and a PBS member network, operated by the Iowa Public Broadcasting Board, a state agency. From its headquarters and studios at 6450 Corporate Drive in Johnston, a suburb of Des Moines, it runs the nine full-power PBS stations licensed to the board: KDIN-TV Des Moines, KIIN Iowa City, KBIN-TV Council Bluffs, KHIN Red Oak, KQIN Davenport, KRIN Waterloo, KSIN-TV Sioux City, KTIN Fort Dodge and KYIN Mason City. Together they reach almost all of Iowa and parts of Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
The network traces its roots to KDPS-TV, the Des Moines Public Schools educational station that signed on in 1959. The state bought it in 1969 as the base of the Iowa Educational Broadcasting Network, which became a charter member of PBS, took the name Iowa Public Television in 1982 and rebranded as Iowa PBS in 2020. Its mission is to educate, inform, enrich and inspire Iowans.
Iowa PBS broadcasts four channels (Iowa PBS, Iowa PBS Kids, World and Create) and streams through Iowa PBS Passport. Its local productions include the public affairs program Iowa Press, which premiered in 1971, the agriculture and markets program Market to Market (1975), Iowa Ingredient, Iowa Life and Road Trip Iowa, and it has covered the Iowa State Fair since 1971. Iowa PBS Education offers classroom resources, initiatives and training for educators, and the network runs internships for Iowa college students and a mentorship program for high school students.
The network has about 100 full and part-time employees. The Iowa PBS Foundation, also known as Friends of Iowa PBS, is a separate 501(c)(3) organization with about 18 staff that raises support through membership, major and planned gifts, corporate sponsorship and grants, and reports to its own statewide board. Iowa PBS hires for production, broadcast, communications and audience engagement, education and emerging media roles and posts its openings on the State of Iowa job portal; the foundation hires for fundraising and donor relations roles.
