New England News Collaborative
An NPR regional newsroom of ten public media stations across Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, hosted by Connecticut Public in Hartford and reporting local and regional news on climate, health, equity, politics and the economy.
The New England News Collaborative (NENC) is a regional newsroom made up of ten public media stations in the Northeast that work together, and with NPR, to coordinate news coverage, share reporting and advance best practices in all aspects of journalism. It was founded in 2015 with support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and became an NPR regional newsroom in July 2024. Connecticut Public in Hartford, Connecticut is the collaborative's lead station and host organization, and the collaborative's roots go back to an environmental reporting initiative that WNPR started in 2006.
Its partner stations are Connecticut Public, WBUR, GBH, New Hampshire Public Radio, Vermont Public, Maine Public, New England Public Media, CAI Cape and Islands, WSHU and Rhode Island PBS/The Public's Radio. Together they report the top local and regional stories of New England on issues such as climate change and the environment, health, racial equity, politics and the economy, and publish that work on air, on nenc.news and on the member stations' own platforms.
The NENC's stated mission is to produce impactful multimedia journalism that informs and empowers audiences to become change agents in their communities. Its work includes building capacity in professional development, visual storytelling and multimedia collaboration so that member newsrooms can excel across radio, video, digital and social media. It runs Our New England, a social media project about the region's outdoors, and previously produced NEXT, a weekly program about New England, with WNPR through 2021. The collaborative is a Lead Villager of Think Public Media, a founding sponsor of NAHJ New England's En hora buena series, and has sponsored the UNIFY Career Summit for early-career journalists in Boston.
NENC staff positions such as editors, regional reporters and visual journalists are employed through Connecticut Public and posted on its careers site; the member stations hire for their own newsrooms separately. The collaborative also keeps an internal database of prospective journalism talent that early-career and experienced journalists can opt into from its careers page.
