Central Florida Public Media is a nonprofit public media news organization based in Orlando, Florida. Known as WMFE until it rebranded in April 2024, it is community owned and independently operated by Community Communications, Inc., and is supported mainly by individual donors, foundations and corporate sponsors.
The organization operates 90.7 WMFE, metro Orlando's primary provider of NPR programming; 90.7-2 HD Classical; and 89.5 WMFV, public radio for The Villages, Leesburg and the Golden Triangle. WMFE-FM signed on in 1980, and WMFV in Cedar Creek, added after a 2017 purchase, carries most of its programming to Lake and Marion counties. Its journalism serves nine counties (Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Volusia, Lake, Marion, Sumter, Brevard and Polk) on FM and HD radio, its website and app, podcasts, smart speakers, social media and live events. The studios are at the Hugh F. McKean Public Broadcasting Center on East Colonial Drive in Orlando.
Its mission is to connect and empower the region through trustworthy, independent journalism and thoughtful conversation rooted in fact. Local work includes the weekly show Talking Central Florida, the space exploration podcast and radio show Are We There Yet?, election voter guides, and community events such as the Engage series.
The newsroom hires beat and general assignment reporters (recent hires covered education, and elections and investigations), show producers, and journalists who host local breaks during Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Its postings describe a benefits package with health insurance, a 401(k) and paid time off, and work-from-home options for most positions. It also runs an unpaid, for-credit internship program with reporting and show production tracks.
