WXXI-TV signed on as Rochester's first noncommercial educational television station on September 6, 1966, and the organization is based at the WXXI Public Broadcasting Center on State Street in Rochester.
On television, WXXI-TV is a PBS member station, with the multicast channels WXXI World, WXXI Create and WXXI PBS KIDS, and WXXI programs City 12 for city residents with the City of Rochester. WXXI Education provides programming, resources, training and events for educators, families and students, and WXXI Production Services offers video and audio production to outside clients. The organization describes its current direction as a WXXI Studios strategy bringing together journalism, arts and culture, independent film, music, education, live experiences and community storytelling across these brands.
