WMHT Public Media is the community-licensed PBS and NPR member organization for New York's Capital Region, operating WMHT-TV, Classical WMHT-FM, WEXT Radio and the RISE radio reading service from Troy, New York.
WMHT Public Media is a nonprofit public media organization serving New York's Capital Region, reaching more than one million people in communities from the Mid-Hudson Valley to the Berkshires, including portions of Vermont and Connecticut. It is licensed to WMHT Educational Telecommunications, a locally owned 501(c)(3) community licensee, and its television and radio stations share studios and offices at 4 Global View in Troy, New York, in the Rensselaer Technology Park.
WMHT signed on the air on March 26, 1962, on UHF channel 17 as the second educational television station in New York State, and was a charter member of PBS. In 1972 it launched WMHT-FM, the first noncommercial classical music station in the United States.
Today WMHT operates the PBS member station WMHT-DT (17.1) with Create (17.2), World (17.3) and WMHT PBS Kids (17.4); Classical WMHT-FM 89.1 and WRHV 88.7; WEXT Radio 97.7 and 106.1, an adult album alternative public radio service; and RISE, a radio reading service for people who are blind or print disabled. It produces local programming including AHA! A House for Arts and New York NOW, the statewide public affairs program carried by public stations across New York. Its work focuses on three areas of community need: civic and public affairs, arts and culture, and children and education.
WMHT hires for corporate support and sponsorship sales, video production and editing, and other broadcast, digital, education and business roles, and offers internships for college students in television production, radio production, RISE and education and community engagement. The Times Union has recognized it as one of the Capital Region's Top Workplaces.
