WVTF Radio IQ is the Virginia Tech Foundation's public radio service, based in Roanoke. It broadcasts Radio IQ news and information and WVTF Music across nearly two-thirds of Virginia, with studios in Roanoke and Charlottesville.
WVTF Radio IQ is a public radio organization based in Roanoke, Virginia. It runs two program services: Radio IQ, a news and information service that carries local, state and regional news alongside programming from NPR and the BBC, and WVTF Music, which plays classical, jazz and Americana music. Together they reach nearly two-thirds of Virginia on more than 20 transmitters and translators, from Bristol and Wise in the southwest to Roanoke, Lynchburg, Lexington, Charlottesville, Fredericksburg and Richmond, and they stream worldwide through the station's website and apps.
The station signed on in 1973 as WVWR, operated by Virginia Western Community College. The Virginia Tech Foundation, the fundraising arm of Virginia Tech, bought it in 1982 and changed the call letters to WVTF, and the foundation remains the licensee. Radio IQ began in 2003 as an all news and information stream, and in 2017 it moved to the network's most powerful frequencies. Its full-power stations include WVTF in Roanoke, WVTU and WVTW in the Charlottesville area, WVTR in Marion, WWVT in Ferrum, WRIQ in Charles City, WISE in Wise, WQIQ in Spotsylvania and WIQR in Lexington.
Staff work from the WVTF Public Radio Broadcast Center on Kingsbury Lane in Roanoke and from a satellite studio and newsroom in downtown Charlottesville. The newsroom takes part in Virginia Public Radio, a statewide news sharing partnership, and in 2022 it won the national Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence in the small market radio category. The station also carries a volunteer-run radio reading service for people who are print impaired, which began in 1979.
Departments include programming and broadcast operations, web and digital media, state and regional news, listener giving and major and planned giving, corporate underwriting, broadcast engineering and the business office. Recent hires include a director of content and distribution and a Roanoke reporter. Openings are posted on the station's website and on Virginia Tech's jobs site, and the station takes part in the Virginia Association of Broadcasters summer internship program.
