WERS 88.9 FM is a noncommercial, listener-supported radio station in Boston, Massachusetts, licensed to Emerson College and broadcasting from the college's downtown campus. It signed on in November 1949 as the first noncommercial radio station in New England and calls itself Boston's UnCommon Radio.
The station is a music discovery service. Its daytime format is Triple A (adult album alternative), drawing on more than 20 musical styles, with R&B, slow jams and soul in the evenings and family-friendly shows followed by cultural and spiritual programming on weekends. It also airs frequent live in-studio sessions from local and touring artists (the station says more than any other in the region), weekday drive-time news segments and the weekly public affairs show You Are Here.
Beyond 88.9 FM, WERS broadcasts in HD Radio, relays its signal through translators at 96.5 FM in New Bedford and 101.5 FM in Gloucester, streams worldwide online and through its app, and runs ERS+ (wersplus.org), a Black experience R&B and hip hop service. The station says it reaches more than 150,000 listeners in the Boston area each week.
WERS is student-run and professionally managed. Undergraduate Emerson students work alongside a small professional staff (general manager, operations manager, brand manager, membership and development staff and a morning show host) on teams for on-air hosting, news, audio production, live sessions, promotions, sponsorship, video, photography, design, music writing and social media. Student staff positions are open only to enrolled Emerson students and earn non-tuition credit; professional staff roles are Emerson College positions posted on the college's staff job board.
