WBUR (90.9 FM) is a public radio station in Boston, Massachusetts, and an NPR member station. It is owned by Boston University, whose trustees hold the license, and it calls itself "Boston's NPR News Station." WBUR went on the air in 1950. Its studios are in the Lavine Broadcast Center on Commonwealth Avenue on the Boston University campus, which also houses WBUR CitySpace, the station's events venue. Two more stations carry its programming on Cape Cod and the Islands: WBUH (89.1 FM) in Brewster and WBUA (92.7 FM) in Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard.
WBUR produces two nationally distributed programs: Here & Now, a newsmagazine produced with NPR and carried by hundreds of stations, and On Point, syndicated by American Public Media. The station says it reaches about 6.2 million listeners across the country each week. Locally it hosts Morning Edition and All Things Considered, runs a newsroom covering Boston and the region, and publishes newsletters including WBUR Today and the opinion site Cognoscenti. Its podcasts have included Modern Love, Dear Sugars, Endless Thread, Circle Round, Violation and The Common. CitySpace Productions, its creative studio, makes branded video, audio series and event programming for sponsors. WBUR is a nonprofit with no paywall and relies on audience support.
WBUR hires reporters, editors and producers for its local newsroom, national shows and podcasts, along with staff in digital, sponsorship sales, fundraising, finance, engineering and operations. Staff are Boston University employees with university benefits, and openings are posted on Boston University's staff careers site. The station also runs yearlong, salaried newsroom fellowships for early career journalists.
