Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting Corporation

Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting Corporation is the community nonprofit that operates 90.5 WESA, Pittsburgh's NPR news station, and 91.3 WYEP, an adult album alternative music station, serving southwestern Pennsylvania from the South Side.

Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting Corporation (PCBC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public media organization based at the Community Broadcast Center, 67 Bedford Square, on Pittsburgh's South Side. Its mission is to create and distribute trusted content, build connections and strengthen the community through public media. Through its two radio stations, 90.5 WESA and 91.3 WYEP, it serves the more than 2 million residents of Pittsburgh and its surrounding communities.

90.5 WESA is Pittsburgh's NPR News Station. Its newsroom is the largest full-time radio newsroom in the region, covering government and accountability, health and science, education, and arts and culture on the air, online and through its daily newsletter, Inbox Edition. WESA is heard on 90.5 FM in Pittsburgh, 92.3 FM in New Baltimore, 100.5 FM in Johnstown and 104.1 FM in Ligonier and Somerset.

91.3 WYEP is an independent, listener-supported public radio station and Pittsburgh's source for adult album alternative music and musical discovery, playing indie rock, Americana, blues, roots, and classic and modern rock. On the air since 1974, it is regarded as one of the leading noncommercial Triple-A stations in the country and a longtime cultural institution in western Pennsylvania.

The corporation was chartered in 1972 by a group of volunteers and put WYEP on the air in April 1974 with an all-volunteer staff. In 2006 it opened the Community Broadcast Center, the nation's first LEED Silver certified radio station. In 2011 its newly formed subsidiary, Essential Public Media, bought Duquesne University's WDUQ and turned it into a news station, which took the call letters WESA in 2012. The two organizations merged on January 1, 2016, leaving PCBC as the sole nonprofit owner and operator of both stations.

PCBC hires reporters, editors, hosts and producers, programming and operations staff, digital and creative services staff, technology staff, membership, major gifts, institutional giving and media sales staff, and finance and administration staff, and it runs paid newsroom internships for undergraduate and graduate students. Its full-time exempt employees receive a 403(b) retirement plan with a 6% company match, medical, dental and vision coverage, three weeks of vacation, 10 company holidays and 12 weeks of paid new parent leave. Openings for both stations are posted on its recruiting site and linked from its careers page.
