PBS North is the public media organization for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, running PBS member stations WDSE in Duluth and WRPT in Hibbing along with the radio station The North 103.3 FM.
PBS North is the public media organization serving northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin from studios in Duluth, Minnesota. It operates two PBS member television stations, WDSE (channel 8) in Duluth and WRPT (channel 31) in Hibbing, which carries WDSE's programming to Minnesota's Iron Range, and its sister station The North 103.3 FM (WDSE-FM), a public radio station with an adult album alternative format and specialty jazz and blues programs.
The stations are operated by the Duluth-Superior Area Educational Television Corporation (DSAETC), a nonprofit that does business as PBS North and The North 103.3 FM. WDSE first went on the air in September 1964 as the second educational television station in Minnesota, and since 1978 the organization has worked from the Sax Brothers Memorial Communications Center on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus. WRPT signed on in 2008. The stations first used the PBS North name in 2010, went by WDSE-WRPT from 2012, and returned to PBS North with a new North Star logo in January 2023.
PBS North broadcasts five over-the-air channels, including PBS, PBS Explore and World Channel, Create, the Minnesota Channel and PBS Kids, and streams through the free PBS Video App. Its local productions include Almanac North, Intersections, The Slice and Native Report, along with Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra concerts, and its Cardinal Learning Hub education initiative works with PBS KIDS and PBS LearningMedia.
The organization hires for television and radio production, including studio floor crew and a paid production fellowship for college students, as well as fundraising and development, business development and underwriting sales, and events and community engagement.
