Northern California Public Media is the nonprofit public broadcaster in Rohnert Park that runs KRCB TV 22 (PBS), KPJK TV 60 and the NPR stations KRCB FM 104.9 and KRCG 91.1, serving Sonoma County and the San Francisco Bay Area.
Northern California Public Media (NorCal Public Media) is a nonprofit public media organization based in Rohnert Park, in Sonoma County, serving the North Bay and the greater San Francisco Bay Area. It is owned and operated by the Rural California Broadcasting Corporation, a community nonprofit founded in 1981 that signed on KRCB television on December 2, 1984 and added FM radio in 1994. After buying San Mateo's KCSM-TV (now KPJK) in 2018, the organization took the Northern California Public Media name.
The organization operates KRCB TV 22, a PBS member station licensed to Cotati, with added channels for Create and NHK World Japan; KPJK TV 60 in San Mateo, an independent public station carrying American Public Television programming along with France 24, NHK World Japan, DW News and FNX First Nations Experience; and an NPR member radio service on KRCB FM 104.9 and KRCG 91.1, with a repeater on 90.9, serving Sonoma County with NPR news, local news and talk, and adult album alternative, jazz, blues and world music. The stations share studios on Professional Center Drive in Rohnert Park, and both TV signals transmit from Sutro Tower in San Francisco.
Local production is central to its work. The newsroom produces daily radio features on the North Bay and the television public affairs program Connect the Bay. Its Center for Environmental Reporting produces Bay Area Bountiful, Climate California and the environmental justice podcast Living Downstream, and the arts schedule includes Live from the Freight & Salvage and Santa Rosa Symphony on the Air. The organization also distributes programs nationally to public television. Its stated mission is to be a trusted, independent and essential voice that heightens awareness of the diversity of the human experience, reports on issues of importance, and convenes public discussion to strengthen the community.
NorCal Public Media is a small organization whose staff covers news reporting and anchoring, radio hosting and production, TV production, editing and promotion, national program distribution, master control and broadcast engineering, IT, traffic, development, underwriting and community partnerships, marketing and communications, and community education and engagement. It also runs a paid internship program, funded by a bequest from J. Patrick Geis, for college, technical school and high school students in news, audio and video production, environmental reporting and social media. Openings are posted on its Employment and Internships pages.
