Koahnic Broadcast Corporation (KBC) is a nonprofit media organization that produces and distributes Native and Indigenous content through Alaska Native governance and operation. Its mission is to bring Native voices to Alaska and the nation. Cook Inlet Region, Inc., an Alaska Native regional corporation created under the 1971 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, was instrumental in developing KBC, which was founded in 1996. It is based in Anchorage, Alaska, with a satellite office and studios in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The word "koahnic" is of Athabascan origin and means "live air." KBC is funded in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
In Anchorage, KBC owns and operates KNBA 90.3 FM, the first Native radio station in an urban market, along with Rising Indigenous Voices Radio (RIVR), an internet radio station streaming modern Native music.
Nationally, KBC produces National Native News, a daily five-minute newscast on Native and Indigenous issues that began in 1987 and is carried by more than 100 radio stations and published as a podcast and website; Native America Calling, a live call-in program on issues relevant to Native communities, produced in its Albuquerque studios; and INDIGEFI, a Native music program and podcast. Native Voice One (NV1), which Koahnic has operated since 2006, is its distribution arm. NV1 serves KBC's own and outside programming to radio stations across the continent, including most of the country's Native-owned stations and urban stations serving Native communities, as well as digital channels such as YouTube and TikTok.
KBC hires for newsroom and journalism, audio production, music programming, underwriting sales, fundraising and management roles in Anchorage and Albuquerque. Openings are posted on its employment page, and applications go to its human resources office by email.
