WUNC is the NPR member station for North Carolina's Triangle, broadcasting WUNC News from studios in Chapel Hill and Durham on 91.5 FM and a network of stations reaching from Greensboro to the Outer Banks. It is operated by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
WUNC is a public media organization that informs and engages North Carolina through journalism and culture. It broadcasts as WUNC News from two studios, one near the Friday Center in Chapel Hill and one in Durham's American Tobacco Historic District, with a bureau in Raleigh. The station is operated by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and licensed to WUNC Public Radio, LLC, whose board of directors is appointed by the UNC Board of Trustees.
WUNC began in 1952 as a student-run station at UNC-Chapel Hill and signed on in its current form on April 3, 1976, as North Carolina's second NPR member station. It marks its 50th anniversary in 2026. Alongside NPR, American Public Media, PRX and BBC World Service programming, it produces the daily news and public affairs program Due South, the program Embodied, The Broadside podcast, the folk and traditional music program Back Porch Music (on the air since 1977) and the nationally syndicated The People's Pharmacy.
The flagship signal at 91.5 FM covers the Triangle, and a network of FM stations carries WUNC to Fayetteville, Rocky Mount, Welcome, Laurinburg, Chadbourn, Lumberton, Manteo, Buxton and the Outer Banks, across about half of the state's 100 counties. WUNC reports a weekly audience of nearly 200,000 listeners and ranks first in the Raleigh-Durham radio market. Its newsroom covers education, health, politics and state government, military and veterans' issues, the environment, and race, class and communities, and its American Homefront Project reports on military life and veterans' issues for public radio stations beyond North Carolina.
WUNC hires through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: openings are posted on the station's jobs page, and applications go through the university's employment site. Recent openings have included a Due South producer, a weekend on-air host and a broadcast operations assistant, and the staff also includes reporters, editors, and underwriting and development teams. Its semester-based Youth Reporting Internships, running since 2012, are paid placements for college students and recent graduates on the station's news and program teams.
