WSIU Public Broadcasting
WSIU Public Broadcasting is the PBS and NPR service of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, with five public television channels and three public radio stations serving 67 Illinois counties and parts of five neighboring states.
WSIU Public Broadcasting is the public television and radio service licensed to the Board of Trustees of Southern Illinois University. Its offices and studios are in the Communications Building on the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus in Carbondale, Illinois, and it is a key partner of the university's College of Arts and Media. Its stated mission is to improve the quality of life of the people it serves and to support the academic and public service missions of SIU Carbondale.
WSIU dates to 1958, when its radio station signed on as WSRV; WSIU-TV followed in 1961. Today it reaches its audience through five digital public television channels (WSIU-TV Carbondale, WUSI-TV Olney, WSEC-TV Springfield, WMEC-TV Macomb and WQEC-TV Quincy) and three public radio stations (WSIU 91.9 FM Carbondale, WUSI 90.3 FM Olney and WVSI 88.9 FM Mount Vernon). It also runs the Southern Illinois Radio Information Service (SIRIS) for people who are blind or visually impaired, websites, the WSIU mobile app, and an education and community outreach department.
Since expanding its footprint in 2018, WSIU serves nearly five million people in 67 of Illinois's 102 counties and parts of Missouri, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. The radio stations carry news, talk and classical music from NPR, American Public Media and PRX alongside local programs such as Celtic Connections. The television stations carry PBS along with the World, Create and PBS Kids channels, and SIU students produce newscasts and other programs that air on WSIU-TV.
WSIU staff are Southern Illinois University Carbondale employees, and the station posts its openings on the university's careers site. Its staff roles span broadcast engineering, television production and master control, web and digital work, radio and television news, membership, and underwriting.
