WRTI

WRTI is Philadelphia's classical and jazz public radio station, a service of Temple University. Its 14-frequency network reaches more than 300,000 listeners a week across eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware, with classical music by day and jazz at night.

WRTI is a listener-supported public radio station in Philadelphia and the region's home for classical music and jazz. It is a service of Temple University, whose board of trustees holds the station's license, and its studios are on Cecil B. Moore Avenue in Philadelphia. The station describes its mission as championing music as a vital cultural resource, guided by the values of discovery, curation, performance, community, preservation and education.

WRTI plays classical music from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and jazz overnight on 90.1 FM, while its HD2 channel reverses the schedule, and it offers separate 24-hour classical and jazz streams online, on the WRTI mobile app and on smart speakers. Its programming includes concerts by The Philadelphia Orchestra, weekly opera broadcasts, the WRTI Arts Desk, The Late Set radio hour and podcast, the Dangerous Sounds podcast and WRTI Presents ASTRAL, along with NPR news updates. The station also runs education and community outreach programs such as Young Artist Spotlight and station tours.

Founded in 1948 as a campus AM station at Temple University (the call letters stand for Radio Technical Institute), WRTI began broadcasting on FM in 1953, adopted an all-jazz format in 1969, and in 1997 split its schedule between classical music by day and jazz by night. Since the late 1980s it has built a network of repeater stations (WJAZ, WRTL, WRTY, WRTQ, WRTX and WRTJ) and translators, 14 frequencies in all, reaching west to Harrisburg, north to Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, south to Dover, Delaware, and east to Atlantic City, New Jersey.

More than 300,000 people listen each week. WRTI has more than 18,000 active members and an annual operating budget of $4.7 million, over 80 percent of it from community support by members and sponsors, with the rest from grants, including support from Temple University.

WRTI's staff includes classical and jazz hosts and producers, content and programming, operations and production, membership fundraising, philanthropy and development, sponsorship, marketing and audience engagement, education and outreach, and technology and engineering. The station posts openings on its Jobs page.
